James Gunn Emphasizes "Approachable" Design Philosophy for His SUPERMAN, Contrasting with Batman's "Intimidating Maniac" Aesthetic

Director James Gunn implemented deliberate creative strategies to ensure his upcoming Superman film radiates warmth and vibrancy, featuring a protagonist that audiences would perceive as an approachable champion rather than a distant figure. These design philosophies are extensively explored in the newly released behind-the-scenes documentary, Adventures in the Making of Superman.

Gunn's meticulous attention extended beyond casting and screenplay development to encompass every wardrobe decision, as he pursued a distinctly welcoming atmosphere. During the featurette, Superman portrayer David Corenswet reflected on their collaborative discussions: "The concept that consistently resonated was your directive: Superman must be embraceable. This particular [costume] possesses an inherently disarming quality."

Gunn confirmed this approach, elaborating, "Consider Batman's contrasting methodology—if I were crafting a Batman film, I'd lean into that darker territory. Batman operates as an unhinged vigilante. He dons an intimidating bat-inspired outfit and deliberately attempts to terrorize criminals."

Corenswet drew parallels between Superman's distinctive exterior-trunk design and safety equipment while modeling an early costume iteration without the signature shorts. "Everyone recognizes my presence immediately—I represent public protection," he explained. "I'm deliberately making myself the primary target. Incorporating the shorts and belt creates a more uniform-like appearance reminiscent of high-visibility safety gear."

"The world understands he's extraterrestrial. He projects energy beams from his eyes, possesses destructive breath capabilities. He represents a potentially terrifying entity," Gunn elaborated. "Yet David's insight was crucial: 'But he genuinely cares for children, humanity, and people generally. He wants youngsters to feel comfortable around him.' That perspective ultimately convinced me to preserve the classic trunk design."

This thoughtful character construction reflects Gunn's broader vision of presenting Superman as humanity's gentle guardian rather than an imposing force, emphasizing accessibility and warmth over intimidation tactics commonly associated with darker superhero interpretations.
